The Grand Canyon Shade Tracker

Shade Can Save Your Life

Heat and sun exposure can be a deadly combination during the Grand Canyon's warmer months. (Typically May-October.) Avoiding direct sun not only makes for a more pleasant experience—it can literally save your life.

The interactive map below lets you know exactly when and where you'll have shade on your Grand Canyon adventure, regardless of the date or the time. Just enter a hike (Rim-to-Rim, Bright Angel to Plateau Point, etc.), trail, or landmark (Devil's Corkscrew, The Box, etc.) in the search box at the top left. You'll then enter the date of your hike in the box at the bottom, and then click or use your finger (on mobile) to slide back and forth and change the time of day. Presto! You'll now see how the shade changes on your hike every step of the way, right down to the minute.

The Rim2Rim Pack: Born In The Canyon—Built For Any Day Hike On Earth

The 22L Rim2Rim Pack was conceptualized by Brian Speciale—host of The Grand Canyon Hiker Dude Show—through his hundreds of miles below the rim. The result is a full-size day pack with running vest features, highlighted by the six pockets and pouches on the front shoulder straps, and a fully insulated hydration compartment to keep things cool. Try it, and find out why our customers have called it "backpack perfection."
